In the heart of Brussels, not only the capital of Belgium, but also the de facto capital of the European Union and headquarters of NATO, amidst the dazzling and rich architectural diversity of the Grand Place (or Grote Markt in Dutch) – the city’s main square – where styles such as Gothic, Flemish Baroque, Neo-Gothic and touches of Classical meet and lend charm to this square that was once considered by the writer Victor Hugo as “the most beautiful square in the world”, a very special event took place on March 15th: the “Royal Affair in the Land of Castles”, which I will shorten here to “Royal Affair”.
No coração de Bruxelas, não somente capital da Bélgica, como também capital de facto da União Europeia e sede da OTAN, em meio a deslumbrante e rica diversidade da arquitetura da Grand Place (ou Grote Markt em holandês) – a principal praça da cidade – onde estilos como o gótico, o barroco flamengo, neogótico e toques do clássico se encontram e emprestam charme a esta praça que já foi considerada pelo escritor Victor Hugo como “a mais bela praça do mundo”, aconteceu um evento muito especial no dia 15 de março: o “Royal Affair in the Land of Castles”, que irei encurtar aqui para “Royal Affair”.
The event was organized by the Belgian EGL community in collaboration with Trip in the Dream, a EGL clothes and accessories shop based in France. This was the first international-scale event organized by the Belgian community.

The Grand Place is surrounded on all sides by various buildings belonging to the former guilds (trade corporations), as well as a few private houses (39 in total). Besides the name of the respective guild, each house also bears its own name. One of these houses was Le Cygne (De Swaene in Dutch, meaning “The Swan”), the number 9.
A Grand Place é cercada por todos os lados por diversos edifícios das antigas guildas (corporaçöes de ofício) e algumas casas particulares (39 no total). Além do nome da respectiva guilda, cada casa tem o seu próprio nome. Uma destas casas era a Le Cygne (De Swaene em holandes, traducao: O Cisne), de numero 9.
During the 1400s, this house served as an inn, functioning as both lodging and tavern. After being destroyed during the French bombardment of 1695, the building was reconstructed in 1698 in Baroque style with the intention of serving as a private residence. Years later, the butchers’ guild purchased the house and transformed it into their official administrative headquarters. They modified the façade and added symbols representing their profession (The Golden Tree, The Swan, and The Star).
Esta casa servia nos anos 1400 como uma estalagem (hospedaria e taberna). Após sua destruição pelo bombardeio francês em 1695, o prédio foi reconstruído em 1698 em estilo barroco com o intuito de ser uma residência. Anos mais tarde, a guilda dos açougueiros comprou-a para transformá-la em sua sede administrativa oficial. Eles modificaram a fachada e adicionaram símbolos de sua profissão (A Arvore Dourada, O Cisne e A Estrela).
After the abolition of the guilds at the end of the 18th century, the building was sold and became a tavern/café, eventually turning into La Maison du Cygne, serving both as a restaurant and an event venue. For more than three centuries, this plave welcomed renowned thinkers and artists, while also functioning as a popular tavern on the Grand-Place. Marx and Engels met there weekly to discuss economic theories, debate with other intellectuals, and draft what would later become the Communist Manifesto. Karl Marx celebrated New Year’s Eve in 1847 at this very location together with the “Deutscher Arbeiterverein” and the “Association Démocratique.”
Após a abolição das guildas no final do século XVIII, o prédio foi vendido, voltando a funcionar como uma taverna/café e tornou-se a “La Maison du Cygne”, servindo como um restaurante e venue de eventos. Por mais de três séculos, este local foi espaço de visita de pensadores e artistas renomados, servindo como uma taverna popular na Grand Place. Marx e Engels se reuniam lá semanalmente para discutir teorias econômicas, debater com outros intelectuais e redigir rascunhos do que viria a ser o Manifesto Comunista. Karl Marx comemorou a véspera de Ano Novo no ano de 1847 neste local com o “Deutscher Arbeiterverein” e a “Association Démocratique”.

The event was scheduled for 1 PM on Sunday, so I took my flight at 7 AM departing from Berlin (it was the flight that best suited my needs). The flight lasted around 1 hour and 30 minutes, and everything went smoothly. I decided to travel partially dressed in my outfit (without the petticoats and the shoes that would complete it), since I wanted to have more mobility during the trip.
O evento estava marcado para às 13h do domingo, então peguei meu voo às 07h partindo de Berlin (foi o voo que mais se encaixou às minhas necessidades). Ele teve duração de 1h30 e tudo correu tranquilamente. Decidi viajar parcialmente vestida com meu outfit (sem as anáguas e os sapatos que o comporiam), pois queria ter mais mobilidade durante meu deslocamento.
Speaking of mobility, one thing I found very interesting in Brussels was the public transportation system. Buses and train stations, much like in Germany, do not have ticket barriers (although in Germany even metro stations usually don’t have barriers, while in Brussels the metro stations do). The payment system is very simple: inside each bus there is a card machine near the doors where passengers simply tap their card to pay. At some bus stops and train stations there are also ticket machines where passengers can purchase their tickets. I found it very practical and efficient!
Por falar em mobilidade, uma coisa que achei bem interessante em Bruxelas foi o sistema de transporte. Os ônibus e as estações de trem, assim como na Alemanha não possuem catracas (na Alemanha as estações de metro também não possuem catracas, porem em Bruxelas as estações de metro possuem catraca). O sistema de pagamento é bem simples: dentro de cada ônibus existe uma maquina de cartão perto das portas onde o passageiro apenas encosta seu cartão para efetuar o pagamento. Em alguns pontos de ônibus e nas estações de trem existem maquinas de bilhetes onde os passageiros também podem comprar seus tickets. Achei bem pratico e eficiente!
After arriving at the Brussels airport, I only needed to take a train and, around 20 minutes later, I was already at the station near the Grand Place. Since I arrived very early and couldn’t check into the hotel yet, I took some photos around the Grand Place (my hotel was nearby) and spent some time at a place that sold waffles, where I was able to try a real Belgian waffle for the very first time! It was also a great opportunity to warm myself up in the sun, since it was a cold day! Unfortunately, it wasn’t very comfortable to sit in that table because the area was very crowded, so afterward I went inside the café.
Depois de aterrisar no aeroporto de Bruxelas, só precisei pegar um trem e em 20 minutos mais ou menos já estava na estação próxima à Grand Place. Como cheguei lá muito cedo e não foi possível fazer o check in no hotel, tirei algumas fotos da Grand Place (meu hotel ficava por perto) e esperei um tempo num local que vendia waffles, onde pude experimentar pela primeira vez o verdadeiro waffle belga! Também foi uma ótima oportunidade para me esquentar no sol, já que este dia estava frio! Infelizmente não foi muito confortável sentar neste local, já que estava muito movimentado, então depois fui para dentro do café.
The Manneken Pis (the statue of a boy urinating) can be found in a fountain that is considered one of Brussels’ tourist attractions. The sculpture eventually became a symbol of the city, and its image can now be found on many souvenirs and even on waffles (here made out of chocolate).

I first found out about this event at the end of last year through Instagram. At the time, I still wasn’t sure whether I would have enough free time to attend, but since I didn’t want to miss the opportunity, I ended up buying the tickets well in advance.
Fiquei sabendo sobre este evento no fim do ano passado através do Instagram. Na época, eu ainda não tinha certeza se teria tempo disponível para participar na data marcada, mas como não queria perder a oportunidade, acabei comprando os ingressos com bastante antecedência.
My preparations had already started several months earlier, with the choice of the outfit and the making of the dress.
Minha preparação aconteceu já a alguns meses antes, com a escolha do outfit e produção do vestido.
Since the suggested dress code was “royal attire or anything that represents royalty, baroque style, gilded/ornamented fashion, towering elegance, gothic and Lolita fashion,” and I had a fabric (which I bought in 2024) stored among my unfinished sewing projects featuring a print of cherubs and herons (?) with a baroque-inspired aesthetic, I thought it would fit the theme perfectly.
Como o dress code sugerido eram de “trajes reais ou qualquer coisa que represente a realeza, estilo barroco, dourado/ornamentado, com elegância imponente, moda gótica e Lolita” e eu tinha guardado entre meus projetos de costura inacabados um tecido (que eu havia comprado em 2024) com estampa de querubins e garças (?) em inspiração barroca, pensei que ele se encaixaria no tema:

The interior of the building had beautiful lighting, which gave the space an elegant touch and created a cozy atmosphere. I really liked the ambiance and felt very relaxed there. After all the rush and stress from the trip combined with my anxiety around some social situations, take a break was something I really needed.
I also liked that there weren’t too many vendors, so the space didn’t feel overcrowded and it was possible to visit all of them.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to browse the stalls calmly. I was waiting for the area to become less crowded, and before I realized it, the event was already coming to an end, so I ended up missing a few little things I had wanted, but that’s okay!
O interior do prédio tinha uma luz bonita, o que proporcionou um toque elegante e ofereceu uma sensação de aconchego ao ambiente. Gostei bastante do ambiente e me senti bem tranquila la. Apos tanta correrria com a viagem combinada com minha ansiedade em algumas situacoes sociais, descansar era algo que estava precisando. Também gostei que não tinham tantos vendedores, não deixando tudo muito aglomerado e deu pra visitar todos. Infelizmente nao consegui ver os stands com calma (estava esperando ficar menos aglomerado e quando percebi, o evento estava no fim) entao acabei perdendo algumas coisinhas que estava querendo, mas tudo bem!
At the reception, each participant received gift bags with small goodies provided by the sponsors, everything featuring artwork created by Fyrhpart. I especially loved the toiletry bag and the keychain, whose color coincidentally matched my bag!
Na recepção, cada participante recebeu bolsas com brindes fornecidos pelos patrocinadores, todos com artes feitas pela Fyrhpart. Eu particularmente adorei a necessaire e o chaveiro, cuja cor coincidentemente combinou com minha bolsa!
After that, it was then time to visit the stands, meet other participants, and reconnect with old friends. Many attendees also took the opportunity to take photos. Meanwhile, the photographer from Aoitori Magazine was photographing some of the participants’ outfits. This magazine is a monthly publication for the Japanese community in Belgium. And here are the photos he took of me (thank you so much!):
Depois disso, os quitutes foram servidos e foi tambem o momento de visitar os stands, conhecer outros participantes e encontrar antigos conhecidos. Muitos participantes tambem aproveitaram para tirar fotos. Neste meio tempo o fotografo da revista Aoitori estava registrando alguns outfits dos participantes. Esta revista e uma revista mensal voltada a comunidade japonesa na Belgica. A seguir as fotos que ele tirou de mim (muito obrigada!).
The main attraction was of course the presence of Misako Aoki as a special guest. President of the Japanese Lolita Association and one of the main global ambassadors of Lolita fashion (appointed by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2009 to promote Japanese pop culture around the world), Aoki established herself over the years through her work as a model for iconic Japanese street fashion magazines such as KERA, Gothic & Lolita Bible and FRUiTS, as well as by participating in events across the globe (in around 26 countries) as a spokesperson for fashion as a form of individual artistic expression, helping promote and preserve it as a cultural movement.
Her influence has inspired countless enthusiasts to gain confidence through fashion and has also helped spread Japanese culture around the world.

The participants then had the opportunity to take photos with Misako Aoki, receive autographs, and take part in video recordings for her Instagram reel, as well as purchase some of her products. It was the second time Misako participated in a European event, and notably her first time taking part in an event hosted by the EGL community.
Os participantes tiveram entao a oportunidade de tirar fotos com a Misako, receber autografos e participar de gravacoes de video para o seu reel do Instagram, assim como adquirir alguns de seus produtos. Foi a segunda vez que Misako participou de um evento europeu sendo inclusive sua primeira vez participando de um evento da comunidade EGL.
One of the people who found great inspiration in Misako Aoki featured in magazines is the very person writing this. I was truly happy for the opportunity to meet her, she was incredibly kind and attentive! Thank you, Belgian EGL community for this opportunity!

After a short break for the group photo, it was time for the Gothic Lolita Awards, where the best outfits in the Sweet, Classic, and Gothic Lolita categories were chosen. The winners received gifts presented by Misako Aoki. I believe it must have been difficult to choose the winners, as the event was filled with beautiful and creative outfits! Afterwards, it was time for the Q&A session, followed by the auction.
I was extremely happy to learn that the event would include a Q&A session, so I sent several questions! I was thrilled to see that some of my questions were chosen, allowing my curiosity about Misako’s world to finally be answered! 🥰
Depois de uma pausa para a foto de grupo, foi a hora do Gothic Lolita Awards, onde foram escolhidos os melhores outfits em Sweet, Classic e Gothic Lolita. As vencedoras ganharam brindes que foram entregues por Misako Aoki. Creio que tenha siso dificil escolher os vencedores, pois estava repleto de outfits belos e criativos! As mentioned before, I didn’t manage to calmly visit all of the stands 😭, but I did have time to commission a drawing of myself by Pomlet, a local artist. It turned out absolutely adorable!

Overall, the event went very well. The only thing I missed was a moderator announcing the attractions over the microphone. However, this small detail did not affect the success or quality of the event at all. I can only thank the Belgian community for their courage and initiative, and I would also like to thank all the incredible people I met! It truly feels wonderful to be part of this enchanted world!

O evento em geral correu muito bem, apenas senti falta de uma moderação que anunciasse as atrações no microfone. Mas este pequeno detalhe nao atrapalhou o sucesso e a qualidade do evento.
